Aromatherapy Properties:
(Uses) Santalum
spicatum, a native tree of Western Australia, is closely related to the
Indian Santalum album and has high levels of active fragrance compounds as
well as high levels of anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. The
anti-microbial effects of Australian Sandalwood oil are attributed to its
contents of farnesol. This compound, which is well known and widely studied,
normally constitutes 5-10% of the volatile oil content of Sandalwood oil
from Santalum spicatum. Anti-inflammatory properties are credited to the a-bisabolol
(5-10% content) which is a counter-inflammatory agent found in high
proportions and extracted from this species. |
